Math Grading Policy

Students earn grades through the assessment of: homework, quizzes, tests, projects, class participation, and group work. It is necessary to complete all assigned work on time. Learning mathematics is progressive: therefore it is necessary to stay current with all assignments. Make-up work will only be accepted when the student has been absent from school. If a student is in school on the day of the assignment, he or she will be responsible for the assignment (this includes leaving early for appointments, athletic events, school outings, etc.) All math work must be done in pencil. Five (5) points will be deducted for any work not completed in pencil.

  • Tests (counted twice), Quizzes, and Projects               75%

  • Homework, Class work, and Class Participation             25%

Homework is given at a minimum of 3 times a week. In order to receive full credit, students must attempt to solve every assigned problem and provide appropriate work that supports ideas/answers. A student will always receive partial/all credit if each problem is meaningfully attempted. Students are encouraged to make notes or write down problems they had struggled with in their class work notebook so we can review them the next day.

Personal Standards

  • Active participation increases success. You are expected to actively participate in class. Be assured that room 202 is a safe environment for learning and bullying of any type will not be tolerated.

  • Math loose leaf binders are required to help develop and maintain organizational skills. Notebook quizzes may randomly occur throughout the year.

  • Homework must be completed (every problem meaningfully attempted) and submitted on time as it provides continuity, enables discussion, and leads to deeper learning.

  • Retests are NOT an option.

  • Please do not ask for extra credit. Concentrate and focus on every assignment. There may be a few extra credit opportunities built into the year.

  • Understanding mathematics requires effort! As Nike says, “Just Do It!”

  • Always ask clear and clarifying questions (a) about the material, (b) if you are not sure of an answer, of (c) if you do not understand what is being asked of you.

REMEMBER: “I DON’T GET IT” is a question!
